Mountain Grove Mo.
March 19th 1890
Sir:
I have the honor to return with this report
the papers in pension claim No 148904 of Polly
Sims, as widow of Zachariah Sims, late a
private in Co. F. 24th Regt. - Mo. Inft.-
Alleges as basis of claim, that the soldier died
Sept. 9th 1866, of "chronic diarrhera a disease
contracted while a member of said company."
The case was referred for "Special Examination
to determine whether soldier was free from the
fatal disease epilepsy at date of his enlistment,
and incidentally to corroborate proof as to dates
of birth of children, and continued widowhood
of claimant." -
The claimant was given due notice of the
time and place the examination of the claim
wuld [would] be commenced, - all her rights and privliges [privileges]
were fully explained and made known to her,
she waived representation by an attorney and notice
of further examination. -
The claim seems to be one of merit, but I
cannot understand why the claimant was not
required, or called upon to prove her claim as alleged,
I cannot find that she ever alleged that the
soldiers death was due to epilipsy [epilepsy].
I think there can be no question as to the
exact date of the birth of the children and of
the claimants continued widowhood. -
I examined the family bible which is a very
[page 19 of file]
old and much worn book, published 1848
and the entries of births and deaths recorded
therein have an appearance of having been
made co temporaneous with the events recorded
therein. -
I recommend further examination to determine
question of prior simiduess [? symptoms?] as follows:
George Serift [?] Muscogee, Creek Nation, Indian Ter.
Isaac Fulton Kenton, Christian Co. Mo.
{Hummell, " " " "
{or Ummell
John Redfien[?] " " " "
Hal Gray " " " "
George Care [?] " " " "
Deponent - James Andrews advised me that
George Serift - above named, had told him that he
knew and had seen the claimants husband
have fits prior to his army service, one time in
particular, when they were working in the harvest
field. His testimony should be secured first
and date for further examination upon the same
point called for. - Very Respectfully
