Notes for Martha 'Willie' Hagler

Willie Hagler, age 18, and J. B. Ralistin, age 28, were married on 26 December 1888 in Arkansas Co, Arkansas. [no image]

Married as Willie Syndle to W. A. Bitticks on 15 December 1902, Prairie Co, Arkansas. See transcript in Walter's notes.

I think Willie must have died in Nov 1908 not 1907.

Mentioned by Ruth Thompson Bittick to Thelma Goodwin in a 1980 letter. Called 'Miss Willie'. [courtesy of Dorothy L. Miller]

Suppose to be buried in Old Concord Cemetery, Lonoke Co, Arkansas but not in the survey found online. Died about 28 November 1907 per one undocumented source.

Social Security Application of Fonzine Bittick lists her mother as Willie Hagler and her father as Walter Bitticks. [courtesy of Dottie Miller, email, 11 July 2007]

Subject: Julian Harris and Lanora Ralstin Harris
Dear Mary:
My great grandparents [Julian Harris and Lanora Ralstin] were married in 1906, I guess at DeVall’s Bluff. Lanora’s mother, Martha Willie Hagler Bitticks, was buried in 1907 or 1908 in Lonoke, Arkansas with her son Leo Bitticks and grandson Ethelbert Barnett Harris. There was an epidemic. My great-grandmother Lanora said that the disease was in the milk, so it was probably cholera. According to sources, they were buried at Old Concord Cem.
It was in October or November 1907, and the thing that I remember reading about it was that Martha Bitticks died about the same time as her grandson, and my great grandmother took care of Leo, her little [half] brother, for about a month before he died of the disease. My great grandmother had caught the disease, but survived. She had 5 more sons to raise. She also helped raise her [half] sister Fonzine Bitticks.
Walter Bitticks was a policeman either in Little Rock, or a sheriff deputy for Lonoke County. He’s the only one that I saw on cemetery records. My grandfather’s brother, Philip, said that they called Walter, ‘Grandpa Bitticks’, so I guess that they stayed close.
Julian and Lanora Harris moved to Searcy, then in the 30s moved to California, where they settled in Riverside. They built their own homes and owned their own property. Three of the five brothers served in WW II and are buried at the veteran’s cemetery in Riverside.
Fonzene Bitticks married a Noel C. Sparks, and had children. They all were living in Searcy, Ar and moved out west as well. I believe that some of their children are still living. They are in their 70s and 80s.
I hope that I have been a help. Paul White
[Paul T. White, born 27 Jan 1967, Riverside Co, California, mother's maiden name Harris]

Based on the dates of marriage for Walter Bitticks - I believe Willie Hagler Bitticks died in November 1908 - not 1907. And, that Elsie S. Bitticks is their daughter who was born in November 1908. Other researchers believed that Elsie is the daughter of Jennie Lusk but Walter didn't marry Jennie until 1911.
