I am researching Elisha Davis in connection with my ancestor William Davis. I'm wondering if they were brothers.
I have William Davis and wife Mary Helms/Hellums in Polk Co., TN in 1850. By 1860 they were in Hempstead Co., AR, 1870 in Davis Co., TX (Mary was dead and William had remarried by then), 1880 in Camp Co., TX.
William's daughter Nancy A. Davis was born in McMinn Co., TN in 1846. In 1846 William (in right of his wife) is named along with other heirs in the settlement of John Hellums dec'd land division in McMinn Co., TN.
In 1853 Jon C. Gaut sued William H. Currie, John L. Bridges, William and Elisha Davis, and Eli Helms in McMinn Co., TN. Gaut was of Bradley Co., TN and Currie was in KY. This is the document that I have linking William and Elisha. Eli Helms was William's brother-in-law.
William Davis b. c. 1815 (give or take 2-3 years) consistently reported his birth place as SC. However, two of his children reported his birth place as NC in later years.
