John Thomas Fairchild homesteaded north of Natchez in 1813. He served as a Pvt. in Capt. William Spencer’s Co., MS. Militia, from April 10 to Oct 7, 1814 and for one month in 1815, according to the War of 1812 Pensioners Book. He and Sarah are on the 1820 MS. census in Claiborne Co., having just been married the year before. The couple moved to Lawrence Co., MS., around Monticello. On Feb. 19, 1826 John Thomas’ registration of ordination to the Baptist ministry was recorded in the marriage book. By 1840 the family was in Hempstead Co., AR. That year the Saline Baptist Church Association met, showing clerk John T. Fairchild of Hempstead county with 141 members of his Mt. Zion Church. In 1860 the family was in Caney Twp., Ouachita Co., AR., with John listed as a merchant. The Militia Roll for Precinct #10, Hunt Co., TX, 14th Brigade, with W. R. Lane, Captain, was commissioned on October 10, 1861, with a J. T. Fairchild as 2nd Corpl. It seems more likely that this is the younger John Thomas, son of the above. On July 18, 1872 while a resident of Hunt Co., TX. John Thomas sold his 159 acres of land in Nevada Co., AR to James P. Hendryx for $200, reserving only the family burying ground. Sarah Ann is probably buried there, but John Thomas probably died in Hunt Co., TX. Linda K. “Katy’ Freeman of Texarkana, TX. has birth and death dates of John Thomas and Sarah Ann in her grandmothers handwriting.
