He was quite a character, had a formula for eye water which was very effective, also a liniment for snake bites and a salve. He would peddle these items through the country in his later years. Steve Deitz has a copy of a letter that was written by relatives in 1948 who wrote of this information on James.

At one time, James had a good stock of race horses and came to Texas from Arkansas. When his son Vick was killed at a horse race in Arkansas, James killed the man who killed Vick. Jim also killed Barton as he raised his gun to kill the father of Postmaster General Albert Sidney Burleson. In his later years, he was a very religious man, was a preacher in fact. Always looked upon his past deeds as a sort of family loyalty. Steve states".

Old Aunt Alice (granddaughter of Sarah and Hobson Burleson) use to say, "Old cousin Jim had enough lead in him to sink a steamboat".

James applied for his Confederate Pension and it was approved on 30 Sept 1904. The information states that he was at the age of 77 years on 22 May 1903. He also stated that he was residing in Freestone Co, Texas and that he has lived there for 35 years in all but have stayed part of the time in Limestone County. He states a disability of a rupture on both sides and senility. Very feeble and unable to support himself. He states his command organized in Texas and that he served from the Spring of 1861 till the Summer of 1865. He served in Co A, 28th Texas Reg't in both the Infantry and Cavalry. He states that his spouse is deceased. He states he has no estate from he nor his spouse. He also states that he receives no income whatever. He signs with his mark James R. Burleson. Sworn to and subscribed 21 Dec 1903.
Dr W.N. Sneed filed an affidavit on 21 Dec 1903 stating the fact that James suffered from Inguinal Hernia (double) of long standing and was in general feeble condition due to his extreme old age.
Ben P. Davis also filed a statement claiming that he has known James since he (Ben) was 15 years of age. He first met him in 1861 at Marshall, Texas when Ben joined his command in Horace Reynold's Reg't and that James also served under Capt. A.W. Truitt and Col. Horace Randall. That James had also served with Ben in the Louisiana Campaign under Gen. Walker and was together with him in several fights and remained with him until we were disbanded at Hempstead, Texas in 1865.
Another statement was filed by W.A. Cobb on the 31 Jan 1903 on James' behalf. W.A. had stated that his first recollection of James is from the Spring of 1862 in Shreveport, La when W.A. tried to trade him out of his horse. He stated that he has known James since the War. He also stated that he knows nothing of James property, but stated that James is very old and nearly blind and that W.A. did not believe that James could now earn a support.
