Butler George farmer 58
Elizabeth wife 59
Ahira son 19
Mary Ann daughter 8 [gdau?]
James son 5 [gson?]

Beth Schofield said that a son was killed by Indians but did not know his name. This might account for the presence of Mary Ann and James in the 1835 census of Tenehaw above. Daniel Brice of Victoria, Texas in a 1995 letter included a son named George Jr. without any other info. Could this son be the father of Mary Ann and James and the one killed by Indians?

In the Teneha District in Texas he was a Justice of the Peace and Assistant Land Commissioner. He was a delegate to the 1832 and 1833 Conventions of Texas, serving on the committe to petition to make Texas a separate state of Mexico.

JOSEPH B. L. BITTICK, one of the oldest settlers now living in Stanislaus county, and a pioneer of California, was born in Shelby county, Texas, June 29, 1828. His parents were Jonathan and Jane (Butler) Bittick, the father born in Tennessee, of Welsh ancestry, and the mother a native of Georgia. They were married in Arkansas, and went to Texas under the Austin treaty. The maternal grandfather of our subject, George Butler by name, was one of the leading men of that section of the country, having been appointed as one of the Government Commissioners to pass upon the head rights under the treaty with Mexico, and having also been a member of the Texas Senate. [Note: George Butler was not a member of the "Senate". He was a delegate to the first and second Conventions of Texas in 1832 and 1833, before there was a senate in Texas.]

Emigration Speculation:
That George Butler, who had been born in Georgia, lived in Jackson Co, Georgia, where he bought land, till after the birth of Jinsy in 1805. They then moved (possibly by the Catawba and Wilderness Trails to the Ohio River and then by boat) to Randolph Co, Illinois. Because of Indian raids many people left that area. (Several families who settled in Clark Co, Arkansas had been in Illinois, including the Butler's, Robert and Samuel Bittick, Eli Langford, Mary Eden.) While in Randolph Co, Illinois, George sold the land in Georgia on 05 Sep 1812. A George Butler (not proven to be ours) served as 3rd Sgt. In Capt. Owen Evans's Mounted Rangers, Militia of Illinois Territory until June 13, 1813. George was taxed in Lawrence Co, Arkansas in 1815 & 1816. I image they got to their new location by rafting down the Mississippi River. Son, Ahira, was born in Arkansas Territory in 1816. On December 1, 1821, George witnessed a deed in Clark Co, Arkansas Territory. [Dorothy Miller]
