George C. Bittick died while on patrol and chasing Indians; he was accidentally shot with his own rifle. He was buried in Uvalde County in an unmarked grave. His belongings, including the rifle, were returned to his wife. George Crittenden Bittick is the first Bittick to be recognized for his Texas Ranger Service; his younger brother, Joseph Butler Langley Bittick, is the second. John Cary Bittick, Sheriff of Monroe County, Georgia, is responsible for both Joseph and George being recognized and honored as Texas Rangers.
