Thomas Jones Family Bible in possession of Dorothy Jones Miller. Thomas lists his date of birth in his own handwriting but does not list his place of birth.
Orphaned young and was in a Louisville, Kentucky orphanage run by Diodate Holt. By 1870 he is living with the Holt family.

Occupation: US Army Signal Corps, tending light houses and with the Weather Bureau. Enlisted in St. Louis, Missouri on 16 August 1872, served in Wilmington North Carolina, Cairo Illinois, Dubuque Iowa, Cape Lookout North Carolina and Castroville Texas. Telegrapher for railroads. In charge of erecting telegraph lines west from Castroville. Station Agent, San Antonio and Aransas Pass RR and Santa Fe.

Much to his disappointment, Thomas was sent to Florida where he spent his time as an "old man" among young boys. It was not the glorious adventure he had expected. He brought home a conch shell which he told us, his grandchildren, to put to our ears so that we could hear the ocean. (I have that shell.*) He enlisted in Waco Texas July 4, 1898 and was honorably discharged in Dallas Texas Nov 9, 1898. [Dorothy Miller]
