Mr. Standard
Ted Kay Standard, 81, a former Lampasas resident, died May 10, 2004, in Munford, Tenn. Services were May 13 at Munford Funeral Home. Interment was at the Veterans Cemetery in Memphis.
Born Nov. 15, 1922, in Lampasas, Mr. Standard was the son of W.W. and Lucile Standard. He grew up living over the fire station, where his father was Lampasas' only paid fireman for 25 years. He was a graduate of Lampasas High School.
Mr. Standard had been a Munford resident for 50 years. He joined the U.S. Navy on Jan. 13, 1942, and served for three years during World War II. A PBY gunman, he shot down five Japanese planes while serving in the Pacific. After the war, he was deputy sheriff in Lampasas for several years. He then worked at Fort Hood.
Mr. Standard moved to Memphis, where he worked as a welder then opened Standard Saddle Shop. He was a master saddle maker. He and his younger brother, Bill, learned leather working from Ray Jones, master boot maker in Lampasas, whose shop was near the fire station.
During the 1950s, Mr. Standard was a rodeo cowboy, a champion calf roper and a bull dogger. He was active in First Baptist Church of Atoka, Tenn.
He is survived by two daughters, Lucretia Ann Buchanan and Susan Jones; three sons, Bob White, Eddie White and Jimmy White; three nieces, Lynda Feild Matush, of Temple, Mary Celeste Williams, of Fayetteville, Ga., and Judy Smith, of Lampasas; and four nephews, Bill O'Neal, of Carthage, Mike O'Neal, of Carrollton, Buddy Feild, of Burnet, and Andy Feild, of Lake Victor.
Mr. Standard was preceded in death by three brothers, Alvin Standard, James Standard and Bill Shirley Standard; and four sisters, Mary Catherine, Walter Gale Standard, LaVerne Feild and Jessie O'Neal.
