James A. Biddix died in a POW camp on Hart's Island, New York, June 8, 1865.

Note from Randy Biddix (great great grandson of James A. Biddix)
James died during the Civil War as a prison of war at Hart Island, NY on June 8, 1865. Elizabeth was pregnant with Cal when James went off to war, and from what's been passed down through ancestors, Cal never saw his father. He often remarked that he was more Hall than Biddix. Hart Island was the last prison established by the Union. James served in the 58th regiment out of McDowell county, joining the war late. Elizabeth gives different dates on two different pension applications as to when he actually joined the war so it gets a little confusing. My guess is that he stayed to work the farm until after Francis died and he and the others settled the estate. He served along side two brother-in-law's, Moses and Elijah Hall. He was involved in many of the battles surrounding Sherman's march to the sea, and was captured in Orangeburg, SC in February of 1865. He was transferred to New Bern, NC and then on to Hart Island. As with most of the men in the NC regiment, he was in poor health when he arrived at Hart Island and died of "dropsy" (congestive heart failure). Conditions at the prison, as with most, were poor at best. Betty never remarried and to the best of my knowledge lived with her daughter Malinda and her husband, Alfred Hudgins, toward the end of her life. I still have a lot of research to do concerning this time period. She moved to the Broad River area close to the Rutherford county/Buncombe county lines. Moses Calhoun (Cal, as we know him) married Tempy Early and they had several children. Tempy died and Cal later married Leola Ownby. They had 5 children.
