Gus, as he was called, started out on a share-crop basis but before many years , had saved enough money to buy a small farm of his own. He built a house there. Fate Morgan, a cousin of his wife (Catherine E. Lackey), reported that the house was still standing in the 1970s.
Gus and his wife, Catherine, were 1st cousins. Gus's father, Elijah Hall, and Catherine's mother, Mary Hall, were brother and sister. When Gus and "Kate" were married, Gus was 25 and Kate was 17. They lived in Halltown for the 13 years, where their first six children were born. The youngest at the time, James D., died when he was a little over one years old and is buried in the Halltown cemetery.
In 1893 Gus and Kate sold their farm, livestock and most of everything they owned and moved to Colorado. After arriving and living in the Lower and Upper Beaver area, Gus and Kate had 6 more children. In 1902, all the children had the measles. Little Willie, who was 4 years old, died from the measles on April 10, 1902. He was buried in the Upper Beaver Cemetery. When Gus passed away on May 14, 1926 from heart failure, Kate had him buried with Little Willie in the Upper Beaver Cemetery. Six years later the youngest child, Robert Lee Hall was killed in an automobile accident on March 22, 1932. He was also laid to rest beside Gus and Little Willie. Later when Kate moved to Florence, Colorado, she had the bodies of her husband and two boys moved to the Highland Cemetery in Florence.
