William Columbus Hall, Nicknamed "Lum", was the only child of the family who really wanted an education. He studied and worked hard to get his education. After learning all he could in the one-room log school he kept on studying and working until he could attend Rutherford College, where he majored in mathematics and civil engineering. In 1876, he was twenty-one years old and secured a job in railroad construction work as a foreman, which he followed in a supervising and later a contracting capacity for thirty years. In 1906 he moved to Black Mountain in the western part of McDowell County where he opened a general store. (when Woodrow Wilson was President in 1912), William took the Civil Service examinations, qualified for and was appointed Postmaster for a term of four years. He was reappointed a second time and was in the fourth year of that term at the time of his death, September 13, 1919, at the age of 64 years old.
