John Lucious Biddix started out as a "Drummer", selling dry goods out of his wagon. J. Lucious ran a hardware store near Asheville, NC and made a small fortune overcharging the Vanderbilts for supplies while BILTMORE HOUSE were being built. Apparently, he had the only hardware store in the area so they were dependant on him for what they couldn't get shipped in soon enough.

J. L. BIDDIX DIES AT HOME IN ASHEVILLE:

Mr. J. L. Biddix, secretary-treasurer of the Gaston-Biddix company of Asheville, died Saturday morning at his home in Asheville after a long illness.

Mr. Biddix organized the Biddix Candy Company of Marion, which was moved to Asheville about 10 years ago and the name changed to Gaston-Biddix Company. He was [born in] McDowell Co on October 7, 1877, and married Miss Maude Hopson, of Columbia (SC), in 1903. He was a Mason.

Surviving are his widow, a son, Eugene Biddix, and a daughter, Miss Edith Biddix.
