In 1904 Joseph Calton Biddix left Marion, NC to attend the University of Maryland Dental College. He graduated in 1908 and married a local Baltimore girl (Maude ‘Mabel’ Elizabeth Johnson) that same year. In 1909 they moved to Hickory, NC, where he set up a dental practice. On Feb 2, 1911, Mabel died giving birth to Joseph Calton Jr. The baby was sent up to Baltimore with a black wet nurse on a train, while Joseph Sr came up on a 2nd train with his wife's body to bury her in her native Baltimore. Joseph Sr returned to Hickory long enough to close up his practice and sell his home and moved back to Baltimore where he remained until his death in June 1942 (died of a stroke). In 1912, Joseph Sr, or "Doc" as he was called, married one of Mabel’s younger sisters, Annabelle. He did not father any other children because Annabelle was terrified of dying in childbirth as had her sister.

Burial: Druid Ridge Cemetery, Baltimore Co, Maryland; Cause of Death: Stroke
