Notes for Lucinda Hopkins

1898 March 22: Lucinda living in Blackburn, Arkansas and applies for Widow's Pension. Application No. 67525. Certificate No. 472454.

1898 August: Lucinda states she lives in Blackburn, Washington Co, Arkansas, age 58 and the widow of Henry Spyres. Property consisted of one horse, 2 cows and household belongings, total worth about $100. Her only income is her own labor. She has one son under 21 but he works for himself.

1898 November 22: Affidavit for Lucinda made by Malen H. Spyres stating he is 49 years old and lives in Pitkin, Washington Co, Arkansas.

1908 May 20: Lucinda Spyres, age 66 and a resident of Canton, Illinois states she is on the Knoxville, Tennessee payroll under the name of Lucinda Spyres, widow of Henry Spyres who was private in Co. G. 3rd Regiment MO S.M. Vol Cal and now seeks to be placed on said payroll at $12.00 per month instead of $8.00 per month according to the late act raising widow's pensions to $12.00 per month. Witnesses: Eva Raker and John Carson.

1920

1921 January - April: C.H. [Charles Hutton] Capps, Neosho, MO RFD #6 requests Lucinda's last check, stating he/she nursed and cared for Lucinda from 21 January - 14 April, 1921.
The Capps state that at her death Lucinda had not property except for a bed and a little money. Bed worth about $10 and Lucinda had about $150-160. Her money was used to transport the body to Pitkin, Ark and pay for her funeral expenses. It states that Lucinda was buried at Bethlehem, Arkansas. Expenses totaled $228.25. Mr. Capps states that he paid all the expenses over the $150 that was Lucinda's. Mr. Capps was sent a voucher for $68.25.

The notice of Lucinda's death was sent to the government by L.G. Spyres [Livingston G., son] of Fayetteville, Arkansas who returned Lucinda's last check.

Before Lucinda died in Missouri, she lived in Illinois for a while according to a request in her pension file asking to have the check moved to Illinois. LouAnn has not found her on any census records there.
