History of Wise County, Texas
page 5
William W. O. Stanfield (1809-1886) was a native Virginian who brought an expertise in local government to Wise County when he settled northeast of Newark in the late 1860's. He had served as a judge and justice of the peace during the days of the Republic of Texas and after his military service. After leaving his home in Harrison County, Texas in the late 1850's, he lingered a short time in Denton County before moving on to Jack County by 1860. He was a justice of the peace in Jack County before moving for the last time to Wise County. His son, Thomas L. Stanfield, was an elected official of Wise County during the late 1800s. Mr. and Mrs. Stanfield are probably buried in an abandoned family plot northeast of Neward on land until recently owned by the Brown family. The Stanfields has a large family of children: Thomas L., Milton B., Ann L. (McFarland), Matilda V. (Randall), William F., John H., Mary J., Robert W., James H., and Sarah E. Stanfield. Matilda V. was the wife of Dr. Leroy J. Randall of Jack County and Aurora.

Excerpts from Stanfield Family History by R. Joanne DeShong, posted 1 April 1999 to the Wise Co, Texas genweb:
William Wall Oliver Stanfield, commonly called 'Uncle Billy' was born July 29, 1809 in Halifax Co, Virginia. According to family history, he 'crossed the Red River into Texas with General Sam Houston on the first day of January, 1834'. (In my research, I;ve found nothing to either prove or disprove that statement.)

In The New Handbook of Texas, Vol. 1, p289, there is a short article about Aurora, Texas, Wise County. It mentions that in the late 1850's, "impressed with the beauty of the place, William O. Stanfield suggested Aurora for the name of the community."

[Names, dates and places are from the article written by R. Joanne DeShong.]
