Notes for Thomas Simon? Bittick

Thomas' parents are not known, however they might be Simeon Bittick & Catherine Null. In the Civil War Prisoner of War Records below, Thomas was captured with Marion & William Bittick. Marion was Marion Francis Bittick, born about 1836, son of Simeon & Catherine Null Bittick. In 1860, Thomas & wife Martha are living near Priscilla Bittick Johnston, daughter of Simeon & Catherine Bittick. William and Marion married sisters (Shoultz/s). It is possible that Thomas and William R. Bittick were brothers of Marion Francis Bittick.

no marriage record found for Thomas Bittick and Martha Stoker.

According to a 19 Jan 1863 letter written to the Provost Marshal General by Mrs. Elizabeth A. Smith, Thomas Bittick probably had only a short time to live. [see Other Documents, Military Records: Thomas Simon? Bittick]

1860 Meramec Township, High Ridge PO, Jefferson Co, Missouri 12 July 1860, p636:
#688/678 Thomas Bittick 23 m farmer $-/100 Mo - md in year, can't read/write
Martha 18 f Mo - md in year
[Is Thomas related to Priscilla Bittick Johnson #691/681?]

[Who are the parents of Thomas? Unable to locate Thomas in 1850 and 1870. A possible son Simeon Bittick and Catherine Null. In 1840 Catherine Null Bittick doesn't have any children living with her.]

Missouri's Union Provost Marshal Papers: 1861-1866, Reel No. F-1138:
1862 December 22 - Thomas Bittick, Jefferson County, Missouri - charges with 'starting to join' rebel army and disposition.
[Missouri Archives online index: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/provost]

1870 - unable to locate Thomas Bittick or Martha, his wife.

Almeda Bittick Burgess death certificate states her parents are Simon Bittick and Martha Stoker. This might indicate that Simeon Bittick and Catherine Null are the parents of Thomas and that his middle name is Simon.

E. A. Smith
Item 6

Mrs Smith who makes the within is commended to me as a lady of intelligence and truthfulness. She is a Pennsylvanian, by birth, and quite superior to the people for whom she intercedes. She represents that they have little farms that need attention: corn and hogs to attend to: that the Union people will have to support their families to keep them from starvation unless the prisoners are released. She thinks that ______ havent[?] now[nor? near?] would be "worse than hanging".

[John, Marion, William & Thomas Bittick listed together on Prisoner Roll. John Bittick, captured in Jeff Co MO 22 Aug 1862 is John Sylvester Bittick who married Editha Davis. He applied for a wavier rather than serve. Marion was Marion Francis Bittick c1836, son of Simeon Bittick & Catherine. William Bittick might be William R. – I can’t find another William who fits. Except for in 1860 there seems to be 2 listings for Wm or Wm H. in Jeff Co who are both single but their ages are off about 5 yrs. This new William might be a son of Simeon and Catherine – he was born c1840-41 but I can’t find him in 1850. Thomas Bittick – I’m pretty sure he married Martha Stokes. He’s suppose to be born c1837, but I can’t find him in 1850 unless he had another name.--Mary Bittick Gallano]
