They had 5 boys, William J. b. 1840, James D. b. 1843, Thomas Newton b. 1845, Elisa A. J. b. 1848 and Francis b. after 1850. In addition they had two girls, Mariah b. in 1841 and Mark A. K. b. in 1850.

Thomas' second wife was Lucinda E. MOTES b. 1830 in Georgia. They had one girl, Caroline b. 1860 in TN and three boys, Benjamin E., b. 1864, George W. b. 1866, and General Jr.

James D., Thomas Newton, and Elisa A. J. all served in the Civil War on the Union side from TN. Thomas Newton was captured at Athens, TN in Jan. 1865, then confined to Andersonville prison and paroled to Jacksonville, FL in April 1865. He married Sarah Elizabeth CANTRELL at Cantrell Crossroads, McMinn Co., TN in September 1869. Shortly thereafter in 1869, most of the SMALLWOOD family (those born after Mariah for sure) moved to southern Missouri and eventually settled in Douglas County. Thomas Newton ran sucessfully for county judge once and served as a state representative in the 36th General Assembly of Missouri for one term. James D. and son Louis E. settled in Wright Co., MO in Mountain Grove Township and are found there in the 1920 census.

Caroline married George W. CRAIN in the late 1870's."
