Notes for Mary 'Polly' Milburn

Mary "Polly" Milburn was probably born August 28, 1835. She was the daughter of John Milburn and Margaret 'Peggy' Robinson. According to census records, she was born in Tennessee, possibly Greene County since her parents were married there. Polly married Zachariah Sims December 22, 1854 in Lawrence County, Missouri. Until 1864, Zachariah, Polly and family lived near Lindon, Kenton Post Office, Christian Co, Missouri, about 10 miles south of Springfield, Greene Co, Missouri and 10 miles north of Ozark, Christian Co, Missouri. Their four oldest children were probably born there, and Polly's older sister, Hannah Jean Kisling [or Keasling] acted as nurse during their births. Polly and the children remained in Christian County while Zachariah was in the military. In 1864, the family moved to Xenia, Bourbon County, Kansas. Their youngest child, Rachel, was born there in 1865, and Zachariah died there September 9, 1866. Polly and her children returned to Missouri after Zachariah's death, and by May 1867 they were living in Clay Township, Greene County. Polly moved her family to Douglas County before 1870 [actually at this time it was Wood-Richland Townships in Texas County]. She homesteaded 120 acres in Douglas County; the land patent was dated December 1881. Polly raised her children there and lived there with her son after his marriage in 1880. Her daughter, Nancy Elizabeth, and Milton Taylor Bittick were married in her home in 1876. Polly originally applied for a widow's pension based on Zachariah's military service in May 27, 1867. This claim was rejected. The pension file is confusing with her claim apparently being rejected and approved several times. Polly's claim was rejected because there was some evidence that Zachariah had epilepsy before his enlistment in the army [see Zachariah Sims notes for additional information]. Polly's pension was finally approved, and she received $8 per month effective August 5, 1890. At the time of her death, Polly received a pension of $12 per month. Polly lived with her son and his family in Douglas County until her death on March 09, 1915. She was buried the next day in Tedrick Cemetery in eastern Douglas County.
