Notes for Zachariah Sims

Zachariah Sims, the son of Briggs G. Sims and Matilda S. Allison, was born November 25, 1833, in Morgan County, Indiana. In 1862 he was five feet nine inches tall, fair complexion with blue eyes and black hair, and had been a blacksmith before enlisting in the army [see Other Documents-Zachariah Sims Pension File, Item 63, Surgeon's Certificate of Disability]. Prior to his birth, Zachariah's parents were in Bedford Co, Tennessee. Briggs G. Sims sold land to Thomas Allison in 1834, according to information from Robert J. Owens. By 1839, Briggs G. and family were in Greene Co, Missouri as shown by land records [Greene County Archives & Records Center].

Zachariah and Mary "Polly" Milburn were married December 22, 1854 in Lawrence County, Missouri. They lived near Lindon, Kenton Post Office in Christian County, Missouri until 1861 when Zachariah enlisted in the army. Polly and their children remained there during Zachariah's military service. Zachariah served in Captain Gallaway's Home Guards Company in Christian County, Missouri until he enlisted in Company F, 24th Regiment Missouri Volunteers. He enlisted at Rolla, Missouri August 20, 1861 and was mustered in October 14, 1861 at St. Louis. Zachariah became ill and was discharged September 4, 1862 on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. During his military service, he contracted typhoid, small pox, "camp diarrhea" and epilepsy, which caused his discharge on disability. He continued to suffer from camp diarrhea and epilepsy after his discharge, and he was in poor health the rest of his life.

After his discharge, he returned to Christian County where he lived with his family until 1864. The family then moved to Xenia, Bourbon County, Kansas. Their youngest child was born there, and they lived there until after Zachariah's death on September 9, 1866.

According to his attending physician, the cause of death was epilepsy. The issues of whether Zachariah had epilepsy before his enlistment and whether it was the cause of his death caused Polly many problems and delays in obtaining her widow's pension. There was, apparently, some hearsay evidence that he suffered from "fits" prior to his enlistment [see Other Documents-Zachariah Sims Pension File, Item 10]; this seems to have caused her application to be rejected several times. Also according to the Surgeon's Certificate of Disability, he suffered for many years from epilepsy, and the attacks became much more frequent during military service. However, one Special Examiner, Dow McClain, believed Zachariah did not suffer from epilepsy prior to his enlistment. He reasoned that a man suffering from epilepsy would not have been rapidly promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant since this condition would have been known to his commanding officer. Special Examiner McClain believed that the length of time Zachariah had suffered from epilepsy was exaggerated to expedite his discharge. [see Other Documents-Zachariah Sims Pension File, Item 27, pages 52 & 53 of file]. Testimony from neighbors also indicated that he did not have epilepsy prior to military service [see Other Documents-Zachariah Sims Pension File, Items 28 & 29]. After years of delays, Polly did finally receive her pension. Following Zachariah's death in Kansas, Polly and their children moved back to Greene County, Missouri.
