May 3, 1841, Gasconade Co, MO, Joseph Hawkins received for Harvey Hawkins payment from Thomas S. Biticks estate [see Thomas Stanfield Bittick Probate File, Item 12]. [There are differences of opinion on this Harvey who died in 1844 in Gasconade County. Some think he is the child of William H. and Susannah (N) Hawkins. That makes him the older brother of Joseph 1794. Others think he is not the son of William and Susannah and not related to this branch. However, this probate item implies a connection between Joseph & Harvey.--Elisabeth Napper]

According to Jane Fletcher:
Joseph was in Platte Purchase in 1833, a merchant and a County Judge. He was a Captain in the Militia (1854) to Doris CO to restore order during the Mormon War. Does she have him confused with the William listed as Captain in Darlene Homme's records?

1845-1859 Gentry County Minute Book:
p.189: In Nov.1851 Joseph was paid $12.00 for six days services and $6.00 for three days as Justice of Gentry County.
p. 261: January 1854 was elected Presiding Judge by his fellow Justices and was paid $6.00 for three days on the bench.
p. 298: Bought his 1855 merchant's license by paying $2.60 for state and $6.50 for County.
