Notes for Walker Burton Rodman, Jr.

Walker Burton Rodman, Jr. was born February 25, 1847. Walker B. Jr. a young man who at the time was under the influence, accosted Absalom Wright on February 3, 1868 as he was bringing a rifle to town for repairs. Rodman wrenched the gun from Wright and struck the old man a heavy blow on the head. Wright was picked up in an insensible condition and died a few hours afterward. Rodman escaped and fled to Missouri and had 2 or 3 children. In April 1878 he was arrested in Missouri and brought back to Salem, Indiana to stand trial for murder. He was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 21 years in the State Prison in Jeffersonville, Indiana. His wife did housework to support their children while he was in prison. She also worked endlessly at getting him pardoned. He was pardoned, by Governor Gray, after serving 8 years of his 21 year sentence. His twin brother, Walter, and John A. Zaring went to Indianapolis to talk to Gov. Gray in his behalf.
[This information was found in a newspaper article at the Stevens Museum in Salem, Indiana, and in the obituary for Absalom Wright, published in The Leader on July 11, 1885. Courtsey of Justin Pittman, 4 March 2002.]
