There is confusion about Caleb, Margaret and the heir listed in Caleb's probate. According to what I can find, when Caleb died about November 1853, the probate bond was filed 19 Dec 1853 by his brother, Philip, and the only heir mentioned is William D. Davis. I don't know if this William is David Hildebrand on the 1850 census. Most researchers think it i

Caleb Hildebrand and Miss Margaret Pepper were married on 26 November 1848 by William Peck, JP at Franklin Co, Missouri.

I can't find a marriage for Margaret or Caleb after 1850 but it's possible either one could have remarried so William D. Davis could be a step-son of Caleb or adopted by a step-father if Margaret remarried.

It seems odd that his name would be Davis since Caleb was still alive in 1853 - that's what makes me think Caleb remarried a woman named Davis. But, who knows.

Maybe Margaret and David both died shortly after 1850 and Caleb married an unknown Davis woman. I can't find a William D. Davis in the 1860 census who could be David Hildebrand.

And, I can't identify Margaret Pepper or Peppers parents. There are a lot of Pepper and Peppers in the area around Jefferson and Franklin counties.

One researcher says, 'Only his son, William D. Davis, was listed as an heir.' But, without seeing the actual papers - the researcher could have assumed William D. Davis was his son and not a step-son.

Another researcher has Miss Margaret Hillabrand marrying Thomas Mills on 20 Oct 1853, both of Franklin Co, in Franklin Co, Missouri, but I don't think she's the wife of Caleb unless Caleb died earlier than Nov 1853. I found Thomas Mills and Margaret who married in 1853, and I don't think it's the same Margaret who married Caleb. There is no child named David or William with them who fits the age.
